New residents of the Las Vegas Valley find it difficult to adapt to growing garden plants in the desert environment.  Not to fear, there are many garden clubs garden clubs in Southern Nevada that help and advice newcomers on the many flowers and desert plants you can use in your yards to make your home more inviting.

There are many types of flowering plants that thrive in Las Vegas; roses irises, lavender, vincas and lantana to name a few.  Plus succulents work well with our climate.  It would be a good idea to visit a local nursery and ask advice on what type of plants grow well and find out what type of soil and fertilizer you should use.

Growing a garden in Las Vegas takes a little time and patience.  You cannot just plant something in the ground, add some water and expect it to grow. Nurturing is needed.  You might want to see the master gardeners of Southern Nevada at UNLV Cooperative Extension.  They experiment with many types of plants.

A great idea is to join a garden club.  Besides learning about the flowers and plants you can make it a social event and meet many new and interesting people.  Desert Gardeners, Las Vegas Iris Society and Boulder City Garden Club are just a few of the clubs.  There are fourteen local garden clubs within the Nevada Garden Clubs.  Many of these hold their meetings at the Nevada Garden Club Center in Lorenzi Park at 3333 West Washington Ave.  Go to www.nevadagardenclubs.org for a full list.
