Las Vegas is buzzing with new residents, and if you’ve been wondering where they’re all coming from, you’re in for a treat! According to a recent study from U-Haul, the top city sending people to Las Vegas in the first six months of 2024 is none other than Los Angeles.
California Dreamin’ in Vegas
California tops the list as the state with the most movers heading to Las Vegas. U-Haul, which facilitates around 2.5 million one-way moves annually, reported that many of these moves originate from California. Jeff Lockridge, U-Haul’s Media and Public Relations Manager, shared in a press release that their study focused on one-way U-Haul truck transactions for the first half of 2024. They analyzed data from the 25 most populated U.S. cities, according to the latest Census reports, to determine where U-Haul traffic heading to those markets came from.

Nevada’s Own Migration
Not all movers are coming from out of state. Within Nevada, the top areas sending residents to Las Vegas include Reno/Sparks, Pahrump, Carson City/Gardnerville, Mesquite, and Elko.
The Vegas Outflow
Interestingly, Las Vegas isn’t just attracting newcomers; it’s also a popular origin city. Many people moving to Los Angeles from outside California are coming from Las Vegas. Similarly, Las Vegas ranks as the second top origin for movers heading to Phoenix, San Diego, and the Bay Area.
The California Exodus
A deep dive by the Las Vegas Review-Journal into Nevada DMV data reveals that nearly 158,000 people have moved to Nevada from California since 2020. This accounts for 43 percent of all new residents to Nevada over the past four years. The peak year was 2021, with 47,376 Californians making the move, followed by 42,569 in 2022. From 2020 to 2023, Nevada welcomed 369,878 new residents, with 211,893 coming from states other than California.
Recent Trends
Redfin’s market report for the Las Vegas Valley indicates that around 6,291 Los Angeles residents relocated to Las Vegas between April and June of this year alone.
Why the Move?
The allure of Las Vegas is undeniable. With its vibrant lifestyle, lower cost of living compared to California, and no state income tax, it’s no surprise that so many people are packing up and heading to the desert oasis.
Whether you’re a local or a potential new resident, it’s fascinating to see the migration trends shaping the Las Vegas community. Stay tuned for more insights and happy moving!
