In celebration of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month and the contributions and influence of Asian Americans and Pacific Islander Americans, Downtown Summerlin will host two community events. Public admission is free to both events.
There will also be lei making and a car show at Flavors of Aloha, a Hawaiian-style culinary event that includes island food, cultural performances, luaus, crafts, and Tahitian dance workshops. For more information, visit flavorsofaloha.com. The event will take place on the Lawn at Downtown Summerlin from noon to 8 p.m. On April 29, flavorsofaloha will host a free public event.
Taking place along Park Centre Drive in the heart of Downtown Summerlin, the second annual Lei Day Parade kicks off with pre-parade festivities at 5:30 p.m. and the parade begins at 6 p.m.
The parade, in association with BestAgency, will feature cultural organizations from the local area like Nani Ola Hawaiian Dance Company, Na Hula o Kaleiokapualani and Tevakanui Polynesian Dance Company. Parade-goers will witness exciting performances such as the Ancient Hula Kahiko — a classical dance combined with chants and musical notes to illustrate stories about people, places and happenings; Hula Auana with its graceful movements; the Maori Haka that displays the ardor and euphoria of the performers; and rapid hip-shaking Tahitian Dances. There is a lot to see!
As part of our celebration of Asian Pacific culture in Southern Nevada, we will be hosting not one but two cultural events this year. Many of Summerlin’s parades mark the seasons and celebrate local culture, such as the Lunar New Year Parade, which celebrates many Asian cultures, Halloween Parade, and Holiday Parade.
