This past Thursday was the grand opening of a ball hockey rink in the central valley. Sneaker-wearing kids were running drills on the smooth surface of the new rink.
Chance,” the mascot for the Golden Knights, took part in the event, guarding a net against slap shots the children were trying to make a score on.
The court is at Lorenzi Park, the first of its kind in the Las Vegas Valley. The city of Las Vegas hosted a golden ribbon-cutting ceremony and “puck drop” to officially unveil the court.
The VGK Ball Hockey Rink was designed and built with funds from the Golden Knights Foundation and the National Hockey League. The aim is to teach our youth the sport of hockey.
Lorenzi Park is very accessible to lots of children who might not have the chance to learn and play this sport or actually see it in action. Having the rink in Lorenzi Park means so much to the kids and families in this neighborhood.
One of the councilmen at the ceremony told the audience that the city of Las Vegas will be responsible for maintaining and operating the rink, while the team has agreed to loan players for at least five years to host “hockey clinics.”
Staccatos from the Vegas Golden Knights Drumline snapped, and a pair of members from the Vivas—tthe team’s cheer squad—rraised pompoms after the golden ribbon was cut with oversized scissors.
