The NBA’s chances of expanding the league are increasingly likely. This would be the first expansion in two decades in the near future and they have an eye on two major cities that are expected to be at the front of the line.
According to Commissioner Adam Silver, Las Vegas, and Seattle will be among the markets explored if the league decides to grow upon the completion of its next media rights deal. The NBA is waiting for new media deals to be finished and then it will turn its attention to league expansion. Silver said he thinks it’s natural that the organization should grow over time. The media rights contract ends after the 2025 season.
The last time the NBA expanded was in 2005 when the Charlotte Bobcats (now the Hornets) came into existence.
Silver said that they will be looking at Las Vegas as one of the expansion locations, as well as Seattle as there is great interest in that city. There are other markets that have indicated interest. He went on to say for the people who hear or read about this interview, The NBA is not engaged in that process at this time. They are not taking meetings right now with any potential groups.
Las Vegas has never had an NBA team but did host the All-Star Game in 2007. Seattle was home to the SuperSonics, who relocated to Oklahoma City and became today’s Thunder
