Our professional Women’s Basketball Association has been playing in town since before the 2018 season. Did you know that the Aces were the first professional team in Las Vegas to bring a championship to the city last year and are playing right now to bring a second championship and the WNBA Commissioner’s Cup home?
They play their home games in the Michelob Ultra Arena in Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. The Aces are owned by Mark Davis, the current owner of the NFL Raiders, and Tom Brady.
The team was founded in Salt Lake City, Utah, as the Utah Starzz for the league’s inaugural 1997 season. In 2003 they moved to San Antonio, Texas, and the name changed to the San Antonio Silver Stars, later shortened to the San Antonio Stars in 2014.
A’ja Wilson, Dearica Hamby, Kelsey Plum, Kayla McBride, and Jackie Young are the top players, and each is a star in her own right.
Okay, this begs the question: What about a men’s NBA team in Las Vegas? NBA commissioner Adam Silver addressed reporters at the 2023 Summer League in Las Vegas and spoke of expansion teams. He confirmed that the league is exploring the idea once the current media rights deal is up in 2025.
These expansion teams are most likely to go to Las Vegas and Seattle. However, at this time, nothing has been announced, so stay tuned!
