This happened four years ago on a sleepy Henderson street with dozens of open storefronts.
Lifeguard Arena opened in 2020 and has revitalized the neighborhood into Downtown Henderson. The arena and a newly constructed City Hall Plaza in downtown Henderson brought minor league hockey practices, Golden Knights watch parties, and many new businesses to the Water Street District.
The Flemings Bakeshop, located on the north edge of South Water Street, opened in 2008 and sells handmade Danish sweets.
Like downtown Las Vegas ten years ago, Water Street is still on the cusp of explosive growth.
The bake shop is just down the street from Archer + Jane, which sells new and used clothing and gifts for babies and children.
The store’s owner, Crystal Moses, also manages the “downtown Henderson” Instagram and Facebook pages, which promote businesses and events on Water Street. Several years later, when Lovelady Brewing Company and Juan’s Flaming Fajitas & Cantina moved across the street, Moses found her traffic increasing.
Griffith, co-owner of Mojave Brewing Company, was among the last businesses to move into Water Street in July 2019, before Lifeguard Arena and the influx that followed.
“Business people are trying to make some money and be successful, but I think with our business coming to Water Street, we also wanted to be a part of a community,” Griffith explained. “No matter where we are, we want to build a community, whether it’s with beer drinkers or not.”
The Mojave Brewing Company moved to Water Street, stayed open through the pandemic, and when restrictions were loosened a bit, patrons tailgated in his parking lot. In downtown Henderson, there are more than a dozen restaurants and bars within walking distance. It shares its property with biscuits and bourbon.
Many business owners envision a lively downtown with restaurants, bars, stores, coffee shops, and concert venues mingling with tourists and Water Street residents.
Architect Windom Kimsey opened Public Works Coffee Bar in 2015, followed by Azzurra Cucina Italiana two years later.
A new hotel and a seven-story apartment building are planned for the Water Street District.
