Local Authorities Keep Their Eyes Peeled for Water Waste Violations:
The Water Patrol in Las Vegas
Good morning, Las Vegas! As the sun peeks over the horizon, it’s not just the dawn that catches your eye—it’s the flashing yellow lights of the Las Vegas Valley Water District patrol car zooming down your street. You might be wondering: What’s the scoop with these water warriors? Well, let’s dive in!
Meet the Water Patrol: Your Friendly Neighborhood Water Police
Say hello to Devyn Choltko and her fellow compliance investigators, who are affectionately known as the “water police.” Armed with bright yellow flags and a mission to conserve water, these dedicated folks patrol the streets to ensure that our precious H2O isn’t going to waste—especially in our arid desert climate.
With a patrol vehicle adorned with cheerful water wave decals and a motto that reads “to protect and conserve,” Devyn is on the front lines of water conservation. “This is my future,” she says, passionately emphasizing the importance of preserving our city’s water supply.
A Long-term Vision: The Birth of the Water Patrol
The Water Patrol was launched in 2002, during a time when Nevada was guzzling water faster than its allocated amount. As the Colorado River faced its lowest inflow, it became clear that Las Vegas needed to step up its conservation game. Corey Enus, the public outreach supervisor for the Southern Nevada Water Authority, notes that “water running down the street is not doing this landscaping any good.”
The message is clear: We need to make every drop count!
The Ins and Outs of Water Waste Investigations
Fast forward to today, and the water district has conducted over 300,000 investigations and issued more than $5 million in fines for water waste. In 2023 alone, they handled over 46,000 field investigations, ensuring that residents follow the watering schedule: six days a week in summer, three times a week in spring and fall, and just once weekly in winter.
During their rounds, investigators use high-tech gadgets—like iPads—to document issues and gather data. They’re looking out for all kinds of violations, from watering on the wrong day to excessive runoff. Sprinklers should hydrate your grass, not the sidewalk!
What Happens When You Get Flagged?
If a compliance investigator spots a violation, they’ll plant a bright yellow flag in your yard as a friendly heads-up. You’ll also get a follow-up letter explaining the issue. No door knocks here; they prefer to let residents take the lead in addressing the problem.
If you don’t fix the issue within two weeks, your fine could double. Yikes! But don’t worry— residents can waive their fees by watching a short educational video and acing a quiz about water conservation.
Helping You Help the Planet
Devyn often conducts home visits, especially during the busy summer months, to assist residents in fine-tuning their irrigation systems. She’s seen it all, from broken sprinklers to leaks in older neighborhoods. “Anyone with irrigation can have a leak,” she warns.
Her favorite part? Helping locals adjust their watering schedules and find solutions to their water woes. And for those who are really serious about conservation, there’s even the option to meet with an investigator for one-on-one help.
A Personal Mission
Having grown up in Las Vegas, Devyn never imagined she’d be working in water conservation. Yet, here she is, committed to ensuring that her hometown thrives in the face of ongoing drought challenges.
So next time you see those flashing lights, remember: they’re not just about enforcement— they’re about education and making sure our desert city continues to flourish. Let’s all do our part to keep the water flowing and the lawns green!
Stay savvy, Las Vegas, and let’s keep our water where it belongs—on our plants, not the pavement!
