Skye Canyon Park will host its eighth annual Skye & Stars stargazing event on April 29 in celebration of International Astronomy Day with the Las Vegas Astronomical Society (LVAS).
From 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., picnicking, music, lawn games, and food trucks are available.
As part of the Thrive@Skye event series, attendees will receive a special commemorative pin. After dark, constellation viewing and celestial exploration are available.
LVAS is a nonprofit organization of amateur astronomers that promotes astronomy in Southern Nevada, and you can donate to it during this event. A $5 raffle ticket will also be available for purchase with proceeds going to LVAS in exchange for winning an AWB OneSkye Telescope.
Guests are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs. Local food trucks, including Taco Ave, Alpha Dawg, Flattops Burgers and Shakes, Happy Ending Chocolate, and Horsetrailer Hideout, will serve beer and spirits.
Volunteers from LVAS will use a high-powered laser to point directly at celestial events. They will be available to guide attendees on a tour of the desert sky using telescopes, astrophotography, and video cameras.
Residents of Skye Canyon enjoy this event as it has become a favorite. Highlights of the sky tour include: the moon, planet Venus, prominent constellations and stars, including Orion, Ursa Major (The Big Bear, which contains The Big Dipper), and Ursa Minor (The Little Bear, which contains The North Star and Little Dipper).
